COSMIX - City of Colorado Springs Metropolitan Interstate Expansion

Landscape Architecture > Transportation >  COSMIX

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Client: Colorado Department of Transportation

With the burgeoning population of Colorado, the existing transportation infrastructure is constantly expanding. COSMIX is the name generated for the expansion of Interstate 25 within Colorado Springs. THK was asked to join the Rockrimmon Construction Design Build Team as, not only landscape architects, but also to provide input on structural and urban design issues. The project extends from the Woodman Road intersection on the north to the Colorado Boulevard Bridge on the south. The Interstate roughly follows Monument Creek, and required riparian design along the Creek. As part of the Creek restoration, THK developed a Noxious Weed and Landscape Management Plan. THK was also involved with the detailing of the bridge structures and sound walls within the project. At the Bijou Street exit, which became the Gateway to Downtown, THK developed a streetscape and plaza design.  Sketches were commonly used as another tool used in public meetings to help lay people better understand the design.
